Catherine Ford, born in Bloomsbury (London), was raised by her mother, her grandmother, and godparents. Her father was absent from her family. She suffered from an anxiety disorder caused by word associations as a young child. Ford started acting in her teens, and was an actor in the National Youth Theatre. Ford was accepted into the Sylvia Young Theatre School. But after just one week she decided it wasn't the right fit for her. Ford reapplied for admission to the Central School of Speech and Drama and on her fourth attempt, she was finally admitted. Shaun Dingwall was one of Ford's fellow students. Shaun Dingwall was later to play recurring roles as Pete Tyler and Doctor Who. Ford did not graduate until 1993. However, in 1991, Ford had made her first television appearance on the show Surgical Spirit. At that time, Ford adopted the stage name Catherine Tate. During the Nineties, Tate could be found on TV in shows like The Bill, Men Behaving Badly and London's Burning. Apart from her regular theatre work, Tate joined the Royal Shakespeare Company in 2000-2001. Tate was soon recognized for her stand-up comedy, that were added to Tate's show in the year 1996.
